Standing Qigong – Part 5 – The Head (Occiput)

Here we allow the back of the neck to open and connect with the rising of the back of the head.
Qi Gong West Sussex - Opening the back of the neck

This is perhaps the trickiest one to describe in a simple way, as it can easily be practised incorrectly if the explanation is not clear enough. But hopefully this will serve as a good summary/ reminder of what we aim for in our classes.

Looking at the image above we are aiming to allow the head to rise from the area of Point 1. We can imagine the space between our occiput (Point 2) and our shoulders opening up and increasing. Likewise the area from our occiput downwards relaxes, and our body ‘hangs’ from this area.
When we do this correctly our chin will naturally tuck in a little bit, but it’s not a question of ‘manually’ tucking our chin in to achieve this lengthening.

This process also connects to a rising from the back too, but that and this fifth part are best learnt in a class.
